Each of the bowls has an open mouth, deep arced body, and round foot. The interior and exterior are covered in yellow glaze with only the underside inside the foot having white glaze. The exterior is etched (using a technique called zhuigong, lit. “awl arcs”) with waves and dragons among clouds. The mouth and foot are carved with lines. The underside of the foot bears a blue inscription with the imperial reign in which the bowl was made.

Yellow-glazed bowls embellished with etchings of waves and dragons among clouds were first made in the Qing dynasty (1644–1911) during the Kangxi reign (1662–1722) and in each successive reign. Designs vary with an open mouth (changkou), flared mouth (piekou), and barrel-shaped belly (dunshi). During the Qing dynasty, the imperial court exclusively reserved the use of bowls with an internal and external yellow glaze for the emperor, empress, and empress dowager.
