The dianzi was a kind of headdress first worn by Manchu women in the mid-Qing period (Qing dynasty, 1644–1911) and embellished with a set of accessories in certain positions on both the front and back. The accessories could be removed and replaced with ornaments of various styles according to changing fashions. This piece incorporates inlays in a design of butterflies among pea pods with kingfisher feathers embellishing the wings and pods and embedded gemstones serving as peas.
