Carved Polychrome Lacquer Dish with Fortune Character, Dragon and Phoenix Designs, and Qianlong Reig

Period: Qianlong reign (1736-1795), Qing dynasty (1644–1911)

The dish is coated with seven layers of coloured lacquer. The centre of the dish features a deeply carved fortune character (fu) with hollow strokes filled with various treasures including prunus blossoms, bamboo sprays, and ruyi-sceptre heads. The sectioned cavetto is carved with dragons, phoenixes, and cranes. Carved around the outer wall are sprays of rose, gardenia, and other flowers.
