A gnarled piece of phoebe zhennan wood has been cut and shaped into the form of a deer; meanwhile, the artist purposely maintained the rustic and natural look of the wood. In a poem, the Qianlong Emperor wrote of such pieces, stating, "They possess their own artistry, without the mark of axe or chisel".
