Carved Red-Lacquered Round Container with Crane and Deer Imagery

The face of the lid depicts a tall structure. A crane standing on the balcony and another crane in flight call to each other. On either side are a pine and a peach tree laden with fruit, and there is a conk of lingzhi fungus (Ganoderma) on the ground. A mystical cave is situated in front of the pine with two deer proceeding from its mouth in single file, conveying a message of good fortune, happiness, and harmony. The outer edge is decorated with cloud, dragon, and lingzhi fungus designs. In the centre part of the exterior are inscribed the Chinese characters of a reign mark which mean "Crafted during the reign of the Jiajing Emperor of the Great Ming".
