This ruler-like hair ornament, bianfang, is made of pure gold. The head of the ornament features curl-up flower petals surmounted by a jadeite bat, flanked by a tourmaline prunus blossom  and a pearl. The flat surface is adorned with paired bats embracing a longevity roundel alternating with stylised floral swastika, against a ground of pierced coin motifs. The heart of each flower is studded with pearls. The bats are inlays of pink tourmaline while the longevity roundels and ribbon-adorned flowers are inlays of jadeite.

The mark Yuedong Nanfa zujin (Made from pure gold, by [the goldsmith] Nanfa of East Guangdong) embossed on the backside of this bianfang indicates that the ornament was produced in Guangdong.
