Pottery Figurine of a Ewe

LargeMediumSmallPrinter
< 1 >
Period: Eastern Han dynasty (25-220 CE)
Dimensions: height: 12 cm, length: 17 cm

The figurine is realistically conveyed with lifelike muscles, a stout body, an upturned head tilting sideways with ears sticking out, and legs in a walking posture. It is so vividly depicted that the expression of an anxious ewe sorrowfully bleating in search of a missing lamb is clearly present. This piece was unearthed in Baiquan, Hui County in Henan Province in 1951.
These kinds of animal figurines are visual artistic interpretations based on the daily observations of ancient artisans yet still receive aesthetic recognition today.
