Imperial Court Collection

This kind of wax mineral paper was made only for the royal family. On one side is painted an interlocking lotus-petal design in gold tracery and the other side is embossed gold. Both sides are available for painting, calligraphy or mounting. The paper was commonly made in two ways. One was to apply a layer of mineral powder before burnishing the paper with wax and then paint various designs on. A second way was to coat the paper with the mineral powder after burnishing, which allows better ink absorbtion. This piece is an elaborate work of the Qianlong period.
