In two vertical lines, four Chinese characters are carved in relief in seal script (zhuan shu) on the flat surface. In the impression, from the upper right corner to the lower left corner, they read, "My heart is clear as water" (Chen xin ru shui). The carver Gui Fu signed and incised his inscription on one side of the stone.
The seal legend was quoted from the epic book Han History: Biography of Zheng Chong (Han shu: Zheng Chong zhuan). Zheng was the Vice Director of the Imperial Secretariat during the Emperor Aidi's reign (6 - 1 B.C.E.) of the Eastern Han dynasty. Through the legend, government courtiers claimed their discipline and honesty.
