Period: Warring States Period (475-222 BCE)
Medium: copper
Date: undated
Origin: Chu kingdom
Dimensions: height: 1.4 cm, seal surface: 2.1 × 2.3 cm

Made of copper, this seal has a nose-shaped knob and a surface framed with an incised line. The intaglio traditional characters of the Warring States Period are in the conventional order-two columns from the top right.
The present seal belonged to a regional governor, since "lian" was both a regional and military unit, and "yin" indicated the official who governed a certain area. Either "lian'ao" or "lianyin" was an official title of the Chu Kingdom. For instance, the Zuo Zhuan notes, "Qudang was granted the title of lianyin in the fifteenth year of the Ruler Xiang's reign (573 B.C.E.)". Also the Han History: Biography of Guanying records that Guanying defeated the enemy, while his warriors killed five commanders and one lianyin.
