The "fortune" robe is the first in the wardrobe. Decorated with multicolored silk patches on black background, it alludes to poverty and obscurity and was the exclusive apparel for poverty-stricken scholars. The character who wears this robe is supposed to obtain wealth and nobility in the future, thus it is called the robe of fortune and nobility (fugui yi).
