Jian is small-size writing paper for letters or notes. The richly-decorated paper is made from mulberry bark fiber. The makers applied powder and wax to the long-fiber paper and polished it, then painted plum blossoms. The elegant paper is even in thickness. At the lower right corner the five red characters in clerical script (li shu) in a frame of interlocking clouds give the name: Richly-decorated writing paper with prunus.
The luxurious paper, which was mainly produced in the Qinglong reign (1736-1795), was only for the court because of its preciousness and high artistic value.
