This oval plate is designed in the shape of a chrysanthemum blossom. Red lacquer was applied all over the plate except the foot which was coated in black lacquer. The interior was painted with five dragons chasing a flaming pearl in clouds. The dragons, flaming pearl, clouds, and waves were rendered in yellow, green, and black lacquer, as well as gold paint. In the center of the black lacquer foot, the Yongzheng Emperor's reign mark was carved in regular script and was filled with gold dust.
The superb design, coloration, and decoration of this plate typify lacquer ware in the Yongzheng period. The Emperor attached great importance to the production of lacquer ware, which boosted the development of polychrome lacquer with gilded designs.
