This round brushpot has straight sides, a rosewood fitted bottom, and three small feet. The body is carved with a design of The Sages of the Bamboo Grove (seven outstanding literati of the fifth century) and their attendants in various positions. They are variously playing chess, strolling, and enjoying tea. The bamboo forest is densely carved and complemented with the parasol tree admired for its straightness and large, thick leaves. The deep and sharp carving are typical of the Jiading (in Jiangsu province) style of bamboo carving.
