< 1 >
Period: Qing dynasty (1644-1911)
Medium: bamboo veneer
Dimensions: Height: 15 cm, Side of the mouth and foot: 12 cm

This square brush holder, with thick walls and shallow foot, has bamboo strips of light color attached to both the interior and exterior. The pattern is simple yet full of subtle geometrical changes since the bamboo strips are of different lengths. In addition, the artist meticulously carved each piece to make it protrude in the middle. Such a design creates a dynamic and three-dimensional surface.
The bamboo strips are tightly and closely attached to the exterior of the brush holder. The smooth surface and pleasant color make this object as outstanding as ivory and jade ones. In the middle of the Qing dynasty, there was great enthusiasm for luxurious goods at the court. Therefore, objects with simple shapes and sophisticated techniques are rare.
