LargeMediumSmallPrinter
< 1 >
Period: Qing dynasty (1644-1911)
Medium: Boxwood
Dimensions: Height: 6.5 cm, Length: 8.7 cm

Almost flat, the brush palette is carved into a leaf with curved edges. On one side, the stalk leans on the surface of the leaf. A lovely cicada rests on the other side. The leaf is incised with veins, while the reverse has decorative lines and verse in regular script (kai shu), reading:
    A cicada should sing in autumn;
    Why does it stay silent?
    How cool is the autumn wind
    that tells it is time to take a rest.
  With fine carving and polish, this boxwood object with the texture of ivory presents a completely natural scene. It is a masterpiece of scholar's paraphernalia in boxwood.
