With ivory feet, the square brush holder is covered with black lacquer and inlaid with bamboo veneer. The décor includes meandering patterns on the frame and a scholar on each side. The figures are variously reading a book, pondering, sitting on the ground, and playing with a longevity fungus. They are all in long gowns which enhance their noble characters. The bamboo design is clear and eye-catching. With simple patterns and a strong literati taste, it is a distinctive and elegant object.
