Period: mid Qing dynasty (1644-1911)
Medium: boxwood
Date: undated
Dimensions: length: 32.8 cm

This ruyi scepter is made of boxwood. The handle is carved into four interlocking stems, while the well-carved head is composed of leaves, a lotus bud, and a blossom with seed pod. Designed for wedding ceremonies, the combination means "living harmoniously together." The wood is from a Chinese small-leaf boxwood tree that even after a century of growth has a trunk of only about thirty centimeters. The densely textured wood is a mellow tan and has no flaws. The wood is as smooth and fine as ivory.
