Period: mid Qing dynasty (1644-1911)
Medium: red sandalwood, gold, silver and jade
Date: undated
Dimensions: length: 51.1 cm

This ruyi scepter is made of red sandalwood and covered with gold and silver medallion patterns of the Chinese character for longevity (shou) against a ground of meandering patterns of Buddhist sriratsa. The head panel is carved into two dragons surrounding the longevity character. Two other panels have jade decorations in openwork with dragons. The contrast of the dark color wood makes the jade more brilliant. This design is datable to the middle of the Qing dynasty (eighteenth century).
