On the afternoon of 15 October 2021, the newly published book The Fold-Out Palace Museum: Twenty-Four Solar Terms (Zhechu Gugong—ershisi jieqi) was officially released in a ceremony at the Palace Museum. Wang Xudong, director of the Palace Museum; Li Yi, deputy-secretary of the Beijing Municipal Education Commission work committee; Tang Zhaozhi, deputy-director of the Publicity Department’s Copyright Board; Wang Weida, chairman of the Qingdao Publishing Group; and the creative team responsible for the new publication were present at the ceremony.

The Fold-Out Palace Museum: Twenty-Four Solar Terms was created by the Palace Museum in cooperation with Yujian Wenhua and published by Qingdao Publishing Group. Designed for children aged five to ten, the boxed set includes a book, crafts, a card game, AR reproductions of architecture, and other features all themed on the architectural history of the Forbidden City and facts about the twenty-four solar terms (jieqi).

In recent years, the Palace Museum has incorporated educational programs into its museum framework to improve educational philanthropic inclusiveness. In 2017, the Palace Museum published series of illustrated children’s books, puzzle books, popular-level educational materials, games, and other materials. The Fold-Out Palace Museum: Twenty-Four Solar Terms is a development of the illustrated Wow! The Twenty-Four Solar Terms at the Palace Museum (Wa! Gugong de ershisi jieqi), published in 2019, which became one of JD’s top ten bestselling new books of the year and one of the top ten bestselling books of the year. Over the past two years, the book has been translated and published in Korean, Italian, and Sinhalese; the English, Arabic, Turkish, and Hindi versions are currently being edited for publication.

The Forbidden City is a creation of the wisdom of ancient China’s working people, and the Palace Museum is a custodian of five-thousand years of Chinese civilization and a repository of China’s outstanding traditional culture. With the publication of this boxed set, the Palace Museum hopes to expand the exploration of the pluralistic values in the Forbidden City’s architecture and cultural treasures and to provide more abundant educational resources for society while realizing the Museum’s social value as a public cultural institution and passing on China’s outstanding traditional culture.
