Image request for study, academic publication , and/or commercial use
The Department of IT, Imaging, and Digital Media provides access to and publication permission for images of objects in the Palace Museum’s collection. The Palace Museum no longer supplies transparencies, only digital files.
Images of Palace Museum objects are protected by copyright and all rights are reserved. Images are licensed for one‐time use only. To publish images previously licensed for study purposes, or to re‐use images from another publication in any medium, please fill out the application form, provide a copy of the previous permission agreement, and reapply for image‐use licenses.
i. For academic use, images are billed as follows:
a) US$4 per megabyte for a digital image.
b) For multiple uses, each image is charged double the normal price.
c) If the requested image is not readily available, the applicant will need to make a formal
application for artifact(s) to be photographed and pay an extra US$236 for each image.
d) US$100 per image for permission of use.
ii. For cultural commercial use, images are billed as follows:
The Palace Museum supplies digital images whose file size range from 5 megabytes to 60 megabytes.
a) Staff of the Palace Museum will be charged US$5 per megabyte for personal publications (including but not limited to monographs, magazines, and journals).
b) Public applicants will be charged US$7 per megabyte for publications (including but not limited to articles, monographs, magazines, and journals). If the request surpasses 30 images, the surplus will be billed at US$8 per megabyte. If the publication is in more than one language, the fees will double.
c) For the purpose of publishing catalogues, travel guides, guidebooks, and other similar publications concerning movable or unmovable cultural heritage in the collection of the Palace Museum, the charge is US$10 per megabyte.
d) For the purpose of printing auction catalogues, stamps, postcards, credit cards, phone cards, public transportation tickets, coupons, and other forms of prints, the charge is US$63 per megabyte.
e) For the purpose of packaging design, the charge is US$40 per megabyte.
f) For the purpose of decorating galleries, exhibition venues, hotels, restaurants, profit‐oriented stands, shopping malls, ad displays, posters, brochure, and other media for promoting and marketing, the charge is US$40 per megabyte.
g) For the purpose of producing handicrafts or articles for daily use (including but notlimited to stationary, calendars, cards, tableware, articles for recreational use, furniture, electrical appliances, glazed tiles, and bathroom equipment), the charge is US$32 per megabyte.
h) For the purposes of publishing images, realizing audio or video products (including but not limited to CDs, VCDs, and DVDs), the charge is US$48 per megabyte.
i) For the purpose of design, manufacturing, and sale of duplicates, the charge is US$55 per megabyte.
j) For manufacturing projects supervised by the Palace Museum, licensing fees will be determined in accordance with related regulations concerning the supervised manufacturing of the Palace Museum cultural products.
k) Other criteria for licensing fees will be established in accordance with related regulations of the Palace Museum.
Requests for photographic material must be submitted in clear writing by sending the completed Image Purchase Application Form with image sample(s) by email, fax or mail to:

Upon receipt of a written request, thumbnail sample(s) of the requested image(s) and quotation of the fee will be sent for confirmation. As soon as the information concerning the image(s) requested is confirmed, a prepayment invoice will be sent by email. Payment must be made in advance by one of the following methods:
1. Check payable to The Palace Museum for full amount in US dollars
2. Wire transfer, to the Palace Museum’s account.
After receipt of payment, the image(s) will be sent within 7 working days. Requests for rush service or waiver of prepayment will be reviewed on a case‐by‐case basis.
The Palace Museum can supply digital image files on CD or via a secure ftp site.
1. The publication must include the complete credit line provided by the Palace Museum.
2. The applicant must provide, gratis, two copy of the publication to the Palace Museum, to theattention of the Department of IT, Imaging, and Digital Media.
3. When placing an order, please provide as much information as possible about the work of art such as the accession number, date, artist, title, medium, as well as about the image itself.
Delays may occur when applications are submitted with incomplete or incorrect information.
4. Please specify if only publication permission is requested.
5. The Palace Museum in its sole discretion reserves the right to deny permission to any applicant whose product is not acceptable to the museum for any reason.
